I shamelessly admit that this post is a guise to show off my Dharma Fish Biscuits…LOST anyone? Since this is a greenliving blog, I will also share a few tips on green entertaining.
Green Tips:
Plates & Cutlery: Use regular dishes or reusable dishes. We have a set of Preserve plates and cutlery that we picked up for a party about 3 years ago. We picked out red ones, because they look appropriate when used for Christmas, Chinese New Year, Memorial Day, 4th of July, Labor Day and or any other event. They are great because they can go outside, they store compactly, and unlike your average plastic or paper plate, they last. They can easily be washed in the sink with some mild soap and water, but they are also sturdy enough for the dishwasher.
Compost Leftovers: Anyone can compost plant matter, coffee grounds, egg shells, newspaper or anything that is not fatty or animal based at home. In fact, many communities are starting to offer municipal composting or curbside composting. If your area, like ours, does not offer municipal composting little red worms can supposedly get rid of just about all your food waste. I will be starting a vermicomposting trial in our home soon, so keep tuned in.
Carpool: If you are having a large event organize carpools for your guests. Carpooling can double as a designated driver set-up as well.
Recycle: If you serve beverages in glass, plastic or metal containers — recycle them! If you don’t want to police your trashcan all night, get out the recycling and label your cans. Your guests may laugh, but it will save you from digging through the trash later.
The simplest thing you can do is to make your own food and serve it on your own dishes. Processed party trays from the grocery store are wasteful and full of artificial ingredients. With a little planning and the right set-up it is easy to wash, cut and prepare your own vegetable and dip tray of fresh and tasty veggies.
Fish Biscuits: Normally I am not a big TV fan, nevertheless, while nursing Winston this past fall I signed up for Netflix and quickly became addicted to LOST. For those of you who are unaware, the season premier was last night. I had a few LOST fans over and we munched on Dharma Fish Biscuits. Thanks to Kung Foodie for the inspiration and the template. I made mine a little smaller and adapted a sugar cookie recipe from the Joy of Cooking. No fish were harmed in the making of these cookies.
