Please help! What is wrong with my tomatoes? This is my first attempt growing the tasty red fruits and so far my plants have been growing beautifully. A few days ago I was thrilled to discover the first few fruits turning orange and this morning I noticed a handful of ripe red tomatoes shining through the green.
Unfortunately, much to my dismay there was something drastically wrong with the little buggers once they had been picked! Their bottoms are all shrivelled and brown. To make it even more confusing, I am growing
tomatoes in 3 different locations in my yard, just to see how they do and the problem seems to be afflicting every single stinking red tomato! Maybe it is the hot weather and drought-like conditions? I have been watering every three days in the morning, but perhaps once the fruits start to ripen they need water everyday?
Fortunately, once the ends are cut off the top half of the tomato is perfectly tasty and firm. On the other hand if this happens to all of my tomatoes, my sauce crop will effectively be cut in half!
Any tips? Suggestions? Is this a water issue? A disease? Help!?!
As you can see in the first picture, the tomatoes start out perfectly normal and healthy, but it looks as though the bottoms are starting to shrivel around the same time the fruits start to ripen.
I googled this problem and the only solution I came up with is blossom-end rot, which results in calcium deficient fruit and is caused by over watering…considering that it has been nearly 100 F every day for the last 10 days and my plants only get moderate watering, I find this answer hard to believe…any experts out there? Especially those who have experience growing tomatoes in dry, hot, conditions and clay soil?
My tomatoes need your help and they need it quick!

Follow-up comment rss or Leave a TrackbackI did a little searching for you and you may be right about the blossom end rot except for the fact that it can be caused by drought as well as too much water. I found this for you:
Fruit with black sunken areas on the blossom end are a sign of blossom-end rot. Blossom-end rot is caused by a calcium deficiency, but this can be aggravated by drought or uneven watering, root damage and excess nitrogen. You can add high-calcium lime, but do a soil test first—just to confirm the deficiency. Consistent watering will also help.
You can also combat the problem with a ready-to-use spray called Rot-Stop, which is an all-natural formula for blossom-end rot.
Blossom-end rot will usually occur on just a small number of fruit, especially at the beginning of the harvest. Once moisture conditions stabilize, the rest of the fruit will be fine.

Thanks Maranda! Drought and uneven watering are both likely culprits in my book and it makes sense that in these cases the plants take up water too fast. It is also great news that if I can correct the problem, it should only affect the start of the harvest.
The one thing that has me confused is that even the pot on my porch is subject to the rot and this is the plant that I water most regularly…on the other hand it has been so hot out that perhaps even it managed to dry out. Poor things!
BTW — I love Gardener’s Supply Company, but I didn’t realize they had “help” pages too!
You might also check to see what type of tomatoes that you’re growing for more information. Also, be sure to pick them as they begin to turn from green to pink. Then set them in a nice window with some sunlight and they ripen quick!
Also, last year was my first year of growing tomatoes in my backyard. My crop stunk! I got like five all summer and most were horrible looking before I even picked them! This year though, I’ve already gotten six off of them and have about 30 more. So it might be a first time thing, kwim? HTH!
I think that Maranda is right. Blossom end rot could be a problem regardless of the watering if there is a real calcium deficiency. My hubby actually read about this to me but we have not experienced it so…no real help from me.
